Manufacture your own little miracles, don’t pray and hope for some sort of emergency to come up and get you out of an uncomfortable, annoying, or otherwise awkward situation.

That is, in a nutshell, what you can expect from Chelsea Handler’s brand new and aptly named Gotta Go! mobile app. Stuck in a pointless meeting that’s dragging on and on? Use Gotta Go! On a date with someone who is really obnoxious? Use Gotta Go! Stuck in a boring conversation with your in-laws? Use Gotta Go!

Gotta Go! is an excuse-generating app. Create an excuse, schedule when it will be triggered, and get out of any awkward situation. Say you’re visiting some family friends and you don’t want to stay too long because they’re pretty weird. Set up an excuse that makes it seem like you got an urgent text or call, excuse yourself, and get out of there pronto.

Gotta Go! – Main Features
  • Simple UI – User friendly and color-coded interface with emojis. The app comes with a few preset excuses and it lets you create your own custom excuses.

  • Easily create excuses – craft your own excuse with just a few taps. Choose an emoji, pick a contact, select when the excuse will start (the default value is 30 minutes, but you can change it to something else), and choose between a call or a text excuse.

  • Fake call excuse – pick this type of excuse and you’ll be greeted with a pre-recorded message from Chelsea Handler. The message explains how you should act when you find out about a fake emergency.

  • Fake text excuse – go with the text option and you can pick a contact and compose one or several custom messages.

When the excuse is triggered, these messages will show up on your phone’s screen.

Chelsea Handler’s Gotta Go! app is available for free on Apple’s App Store.

For now, the app is available for iOS only (which is really annoying).

Gotta Go!’s Movie Tie-in

The app’s launch coincides with the launch of “Chelsea Does” on Netflix. It’s a four-part Netflix docuseries that’s centered around, you’ve guessed it, Chelsea Handler doing things.

In episode 2 “Chelsea Does Silicon Valley”, our protagonist goes on a trip to Silicon Valley to, among other things, pitch her idea for an app. The app she pitches is Gotta Go!, “your free excuse-to-leave generator.”

Chelsea Handler’s Gotta Go! app is easy to use, has a good looking design, and can certainly come in handy when you’re in an awkward situation, that’s true. It’s also true that the idea isn’t new. There are plenty of apps out there and even some handy websites that will help you come up with an excuse.
