Microsoft has announced that in the upcoming Office 2010 suite, which will definitely reach RTM (Release to Manufacturing) and GA (General Availability) status next year according to the Redmond-based software developer, a change to Groove will be made: Microsoft Office Groove 2007 will become SharePoint Workspace 2010 and will come alongside OneNote in Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010.

Microsoft’s Jim McCoy comments: Groove is getting a new name as of the coming release of Office 2010. Please welcome SharePoint Workspace 2010! The name makeover is in concert with the direction the product is going. SharePoint Workspace will provide easy access to SharePoint content (or content from any server that implements the publicly documented protocols) in an effort to provide a seamless online/offline experience.”

SharePoint Office Workspace 2010, according to McCoy, will be delivered to customers as part of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 and will come with several enhancements: it will be easier to deploy and manage, it comes with support for new productivity enhancement scenarios, it will make it a cinch for IT pros to implement a consistent information strategy based on SharePoint technology in the organization’s environment.

Office 2010, as previously stated, will be released next year. If you can’t wait to get your hands on it, registrations for an Office 2010 Tech Preview have been launched (details here). Microsoft explains: “The Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview is a limited, invitation only program which will provide you with the opportunity to experience early, pre-release versions of Office 2010 which will include the following applications: Word 2010, Excel 2010, Outlook 2010, PowerPoint 2010, OneNote 2010, Communicator 2010, Access 2010, InfoPath 2010 and Publisher 2010. By registering you are signing up to be considered for the Technical Preview Program, you will be waitlisted for consideration to be invited into the Technical Preview Program. We will notify invitees in early to mid July.”
