Let me start off by asking you a simple question: do you need, want, or have to call friends and family who are currently abroad? If your answer went something like “you know that’s right”, then Skype’s latest announcement is right up your alley.

Skype has recently introduced Skype To, described by Skype’s blogger-in-chief Peter Parkes as “an exciting new way to call friends, family and colleagues abroad at great Skype rates from any mobile or landline” phone. With Skype To Go you can call someone who is abroad using whatever mobile or landline phone you have. The fact that you don’t have access to the internet and the fact that you do not have 3G coverage is not relevant – you will be able to make calls to friends and family who are abroad.

So to sum it up, Skype To Go lets you make international calls at Skype’s low rates and you can make these calls from any tired old landline or mobile phone, even if you don’t have internet or 3G coverage. Sounds great, I know. To the less technically inclined it may even sound like magic.

It’s not magic, trust me. Here’s how the whole thing works. Say you want to call Auntie Mabel in Australia; and you’re currently in New York. You give Skype Auntie Mabel’s phone number and Skype gives you a unique Skype To Go number with a New York area code. Take out your phone, dial the Skye To Go number and you will be able to talk to Auntie Mabel.

You will of course have to pay for the call. “With Skype To Go, you can use your Skype Credit or subscription and get the same low rates that you enjoy when you call from Skype on your computer today. Except that there’s nothing to install – it’s a great way to use Skype when you’re away from your computer,” added Parkes.

With Skype To go you can set up Skype To Go numbers for up to 9 of your friends. It is a simple process that should take very little time to complete. You can save the Skype To Go numbers of your 9 friends in your mobile phone and thus be able to easily talk to them whenever you feel like it.
