Piriform, the privately owned UK software developer dedicated to creating top quality applications for Windows, has recently announced that it updated CCleaner to version 3.04. This latest version of CCleaner provides support for the recently released Windows 7 SP1 (Service Pack 1). So if you got SP1, make sure you update CCleaner as well.

If you didn’t get Windows 7 SP1, you should get it, because it comes with security updates, stability updates, and performance updates. Microsoft describes SP1 as “an important update that includes previously released security, performance, and stability updates for Windows 7. SP1 also includes new improvements to features and services in Windows 7, such as improved reliability when connecting to HDMI audio devices, printing using the XPS Viewer, and restoring previous folders in Windows Explorer after restarting.”

Before you get Windows 7 SP1, you should take a few precautionary measures. You should make sure you have enough disk space (if you get SP1 via Windows Update, the estimated amount of free disk space required is 750MB for the 32-bit version and 1050MB for the 64-bit version), you should uninstall prerelease versions of SP1 if you have any installed on your machine, you should check for viruses and malware, and you should backup your important data. If you have a laptop, you should plug it in to ensure you don’t run out of juice while installing the service pack.

Getting back to CCleaner 3.04, Piriform explained that besides adding support for Windows 7 SP1, this release comes with these other new features:
  • Added Internet Explorer UserData cleaning and management.
  • Added Safari cookie management.
  • Improved Google Chrome detection.
  • Added Google Chrome JumplistIcons folder cleaning.
  • Added Opera Icon Cache folder cleaning.
  • Added support for Comodo Dragon.
  • Added support for SongBird embedded browser.
  • Added support for Thunderbird embedded browser.
  • Added Registry cleaner for Sound Events.
  • Improved Registry cleaning for Unused File Extensions.
  • Improved Registry cleaning for Application Paths.
  • Added environment variable support in Custom Locations.
  • Command line exporting of embedded INIs (/export [folder path]).
  • Added cleaning for Excel Viewer, FeedDemon, WinDiff and Last.FM, Free Download Manager, Internet Download Accelerator and Internet Download Manager.
  • Improved cleaning for AntiVir Desktop, AVG AntiVirus 10.0 and Windows Media Player.
  • Improved system file detection security.
  • Minor bug fixes.

If you would like to get CCleaner, you can grab it straight from Piriform here.

You are very well advised to get this application if you want an easy to use, free application that can get rid of junk files, rapidly uninstall applications, check for Windows Registry errors, and wipe clean drives.
