You don’t have to give someone your real phone number if you don’t want to. Thanks to the Burner app you can give away a disposable phone number instead.

There are times when you don’t want to give away your email address or your phone number for fear that you don’t know where it may end up. There are ways to avoid annoying situations like these and protect your privacy.

With Mailinator for example, you have access to free, disposable email addresses. I use a disposable email address when I need to subscribe to some dubious site or test a piece of software that requires registration. This way I ensure my inbox will not be flooded with spam or other unwanted mail. I just dream up an email address, and use it instead of my real one.

With the adhoclabs-developed Burner app that was recently rolled out to Apple’s App Store, you don’t have to give away your real phone number. When you want your real phone number to remain private, don’t give it away – use the Burner app and give away a disposable phone number instead. When you’re done with that number, just burn it – that’s why the app is called Burner.

“Burner is a privacy layer for your phone, providing alias phone numbers at the push of a button,” says the app’s official description. “Fast, safe, and totally private - get Burner numbers as often as you need them, and get as many as you want,” the description continues.

Burner App Main Features
  • In less than 30 seconds you can create a disposable number and keep it for as long as you want – a day, a week, a month, the choice is up to you.
  • You can manage inbound calls, text messages, and voicemails from a centralized location. Turn off notifications and rings if you want to.
  • Share your Burner-created number of Facebook or Twitter.
  • Easily take your disposable number out of service. Or as adhoclabs put it, “it’s easy and fun to 'burn' the number.”

To get the Burner app from Apple’s App Store you will have to part with the affordable amount of $1.99. This amount includes one disposable number. To create more numbers you will need to purchase credits.
