Burger King and Torrent File Sharing: Not a Good Combo
Article by George Norman

Burger King (BK), the global chain of fast food restaurants that specializes in burgers, seems to be taking advantage of the media hype surrounding file sharing via torrent sites, and by that I mean the company likens its burgers to online piracy. As you can see from the flier depicted below, Burger King claims that its burgers are “like downloading music from the internet, only legal”.

Now one could argue that BK’s claim refers to the fact that you can get a whole lot of stuff from the internet (especially music) for free, and BK burgers are so cheap that they should be made illegal. If that’s stretching it a bit, I agree. With the torrent community still displeased with the court issuing a sentence in favor of the big media companies in The Pirate Bay trial (verdict here, verdict aftermath here), and with Mininova due in court later this month (details here and here), I don’t think most file sharers will take BK’s ad lightly.

Take TorrentFreak’s response to Burger King’s ad for example: “Maybe I’m getting old, but I can’t in any way see how cheeseburgers are like downloading music off the Internet. That said, if BK want to complete the analogy, I want their burgers leaked to file-sharing sites before their promotion starts, available 24/7 via The Pirate Bay, I want to be able to share this food with my friends (and them with their friends) without ever taking my hands off my ‘copy’. And I want my burger for free, if you don’t mind.”

What do you think? What feelings has the Burger King ad spurred on you? Please feel free to share with us – just post a comment in the section below. Tell us if you think BK’s ad is clever, or not.
