The upcoming 2.9 version of WordPress, the blog publishing application and content management system that has been around for more than 6 years now, will feature a built-in image editor. This feature will be implemented because the users voted for it – after the release of WordPress 2.8, the development team behind the software asked users all over the world let them know what new features they would like to see in the upcoming 2.9 version. Image editing ranked at the top of what the users asked for.

There is a good side and a not so good side to this story. The good side is that the image editor comes built into WordPress 2.9 – no need for a plug-in. WordPress 2.9 users will be able to upload an image and edit the aforementioned image from the WordPress backend. You will be able to perform tasks like:

- Crop a section of the uploaded image;
- Resize the image you’ve uploaded to WordPress 2.9;
- Rotate the uploaded image.

And so we get to the not so good part of the built-in image editor in WordPress 2.9 – it only provides basic functionality (cropping, resizing and rotating an image is basic by any standard). You will not be able to perform more advanced stuff, like add and effect or a layer. For this you will have to get a properly good 3rd party image editing software application, use that software to modify the image and then upload the image to WordPress.

The bottom line is that any new functionality is more than welcomed, even if it is basic. A large number of users do not need some fancy editing tool, they just want to slightly modify the image to better fit their blog. In this regard the fact that you can upload first, edit later is a great timesaver.
