The development team behind Boxee, the cross-platform, open-source media center with social networking features, released a public Alpha version of Boxee to Windows users this summer. At the time the Boxee team said it is “looking forward to receive feedback from PC users” and that it will release a Beta version “later this year.” It would seem that “later this year” refers to the 7th of December.

Today, the 7th of December, Boxee Beta is expected to be revealed at a special event at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in New York City.

“At the event we will demo the new Beta, launch new applications from partners and start a 4-weeks early-access for users to test the Beta before we release it to the public at CES on Jan 7th. The Boxee Beta will look, feel and behave differently from the Alpha. It takes into account many of the requests and feedback we received from users in the past year,” explained the Boxee team.

Here are the new bits and pieces Boxee Beta will feature:
- A brand new user interface (UI)
- Navigation has been improved
- Boxee Beta will allow users to search for TV shows and movies on the internet and on the local network (LAN)
- User controlled Queue (rumor on the web has it the Queue is similar to Hulu’s)
- Shortcuts (for movies, programs, apps, so on).

“We've have been heads down working on it for the past few months, and we're really anxious to get it into your hands. During the event we will also show mockups of the upcoming Boxee Box and will provide more details about the product,” added the Boxee team.

If you would like to view the Boxee Beta unveiling, but you’re not willing to go to NYC, then you should know that the even will be streamed by LiveStream. The live stream will be available on the Boxee blog and directly through the Boxee software.
