Great news for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users that updated the device to baseband version 05.11; or iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users that bought the device with an updated baseband. Original iPhone hacker George Hotz has recently released an unlock tool that will work with iPhone 3G/3GS with baseband 05.11.

George Hotz is the guy that hacked into Apple’s first iPhone back in ’07. He’s also the guy that released iPhone jailbreak tools blackra1n and purplera1n and unlock tool puplesn0w. His most recent release, the blacksn0w unlock tool, exploits the public at+xemn crash; Hotz managed to turn the crash into an injection vector that can be used to unlock the iPhone.

“ If you are new to the scene, just looking for an unlock, finally ready to upgrade to 3.1.2 and the accompanying baseband, willing to restore for the latest and greatest, or stuck on the "Connect to iTunes" screen, you are in luck. Jailbreaking and unlocking have never been easier. Go to blackra1n.com, click on the logo corresponding to your operating system, run the app, and click "make it ra1n". When your phone reboots, you'll see blackra1n.app. Run this, install blacksn0w, and enjoy your unlocked iPhone,” explained George Hotz.

Here are some other technical details you should know about:
- the iPhone OS 3.1 update came with several new features (see a detailed list here). It also came with a baseband update. iPhone users that updated without following a pre-update procedure lost their unlock. With blackra1n, iPhone’s running on OS 3.1 can once again be unlocked.
- Unlocking a device means you can use it on any carrier network.
- George Hotz advised iPhone owners to update to OS 3.1.2 first, then run the unlock tool.
- Blackra1n users can easily upgrade to blacksn0w from within the app.
