Biz Stone Talks Success on Twitter's Fifth Anniversary
Nowadays more than 140 million tweets are sent out on a daily basis. But this hasn’t always been the case. There was a time when Twitter was just starting out, a time when it wasn’t immensely popular as it is today. The first tweet was sent out five years ago, which means that Twitter is now 5 years old. On this special occasion co-founder and Creative Director Biz Stone talked a little bit about Twitter’s success and acknowledged the fact that the users make Twitter so successful.
“Amazingly, it's five years ago today that the first tweet was sent,” said Stone yesterday. “Over these years, Twitter has matured and made an impact in the areas of social responsibility, politics, sports, media, and more. The people who use Twitter have made it what it is today, and on our fifth birthday, it's the people that make Twitter special who we are celebrating.”
Stone went on to say that great stability and performance improvements have been made and Twitter is now better than it ever was. “We are in a position now which allows us to continue serving and delighting everyone who relies on Twitter to connect them to that which is meaningful for another five years and beyond.”
He then went on to relay some Twitter usage statistics; pretty much the same statistics that Carolyn Penner made public last week.
- More than 140 million tweets are sent out daily.
- It took 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day for 1 billion tweets to be sent out. Nowadays 1 billion tweets are sent out every 8 days.
- It took 18 months to rack up 500,000 Twitter accounts. Nowadays close to 500,000 new accounts are created on a daily basis.
- The number of Twitter employees has gone up from 8 employees back in January 2008, up to 400 employees now.
“The people who use Twitter make it special because for any interest we might have, somebody is tweeting about it,” added Stone. “We're lucky to have so many people using Twitter in so many interesting and important ways.”
