Bitdefender Released a Free Anti-Ransomware Tool for Windows

Internationally renowned security company Bitdefender recently rolled out a free tool that can protect your Windows-powered PC against ransomware.

And if you want to get technical about it, Bitdefender’s new anti-ransomware tool can protect against known and possible future versions of the CTB-Locker, Locky and TeslaCrypt crypto ransomware families.

“The new tool is an outgrowth of the Cryptowall vaccine program, in a way,” said Catalin Cosoi, Chief Security Strategist at Bitdefender. “We had been looking at ways to prevent this ransomware from encrypting files even on computers that were not protected by Bitdefender antivirus and we realized we could extend the idea.”

Here’s what you can expect from Bitdefender’s ransomware protection tool.

Download it straight from Bitdefender here, run the installer, and a setup wizard will show up and take you through tine installation process. You’ll be done in a blink.

This is the interface that will show up on your screen when you’re done with the installation. A simple UI that anyone can figure out.

From the Settings menu you can choose if you want the application to automatically run at startup, if you want it to minimize to tray on startup, and if you want the application to go to the system tray when you hit the close button.

The About menu explains that BitDefender Anti-Ransomware prevents your files from being encrypted by ransomware.

That’s what ransomware does. It prevents or limits users from accessing their system. It either locks you out of your system or its locks important files on your system. Then it asks you to pay a ransom to regain access to your system or your files.

The last thing you must do is pay that ransom. By paying, you’re only encouraging the bad guys to put more time and effort into creating ransomware. And worse of all, there’s no guarantee that you’ll regain access to your files once you pay.

Apart from Bitdefender, other security companies have ransomware protection tools to offer. The first that comes to mind it Trend Micro, a global leader in internet content security software and cloud computing security with over 25 years of security expertise.

I recently told you about 3 Free and Useful Tools from Security Company Trend Micro. One of them was an anti-ransomware tool.

Speaking about Trend Micro, the company has a detailed article that does a proper job of explaining pretty much everything there is to know about ransomware. It even includes a handy infographic. This infographic.
