The Mozilla Foundation has recently rolled out new Beta versions of its email client Thunderbird 3.1 and its web browser Firefox 3.6.4. Starting with Thunderbird, it should be mentioned that the first Beta version of Thunderbird 3.1 codename Lanikai, was released back in March. The second Beta has been released the other day.

Here is what you can expect to get from this second Beta version:
  • New quick filter toolbar.
  • New migration assistant.
  • Improved support for Personas.
  • Several fixes to improve upgrading from Thunderbird 2.
  • Several design improvements and corrections to the interface.
  • Stability and memory improvements

Wondering what the name Lanikai is all about? I’ve said it before, and I am going to say it again for those of you that haven’t been paying attention: Lanikai is a Hawaiian beach located on the windward coast of Oahu (the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands). It is a small beach, measuring just half a mile (that’s about 800m, for the European reader). But it is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Moving on, the development team behind Firefox has announced the release of Firefox 3.6.4 Beta 3. This third Beta fixes a total of 189 bugs, including 19 critical issues

“An updated beta of Firefox 3.6.4 is now available for download and public testing. This version fixes issues found in the previous beta of Firefox 3.6.4. Users who have already downloaded or opted in to the previous Firefox 3.6.4 beta should receive the latest beta as an automatic update. An additional opt-in upgrade offer will be made to users on the beta channel later this week,” announced Mozilla’s Christian Legnitto.

Firefox 3.6.4, the final and stable version, is scheduled to be released on the 13th of May, precisely one week from today. The exciting thing about Firefox 3.6.4 is that it will come with the Out-Of-Process-Plug-in feature. Basically this feature allows the user to run browser extensions outside the browser (just like Opera widgets do outside the Opera web browser).
