The Twitter analytics team has announced that usage of the micro-blogging service has skyrocketed. If back in 2007 Twitter users were sending about 5000 tweets per day, that number has increased to a staggering 50 million tweets per day – that does not include tweets flagged as spam. That’s 10,000 times more tweets per day compared to just three years ago. It all averages out to about 600 tweets per second. Check out the graph at the bottom for a visual representation of how this growth.

“Folks were tweeting 5,000 times a day in 2007. By 2008, that number was 300,000, and by 2009 it had grown to 2.5 million per day. Tweets grew 1,400% last year to 35 million per day. Today, we are seeing 50 million tweets per day. Tweet deliveries are a much higher number because once created, tweets must be delivered to multiple followers,” explained Twitter analytics team member, Kevin Weil.

Moving on, Yahoo! has announced that it partnered up with Twitter in order to integrate the micro-blogging service’s real-time social experience into Yahoo! global network. This means that Yahoo! will add real-time Twitter content to Yahoo! Search and other services, such as the Yahoo! homepage, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! sports and so on. The truth of the matter is that Yahoo! search results have been showing Twitter content for a while now; but that content was pulled from Twitter via public APIs. Now Yahoo! can pull content straight from Twitter.

“From our perspective, this partnership represents a big opportunity. Tweets may be short, but they have proven over and over again to contain valuable information. As the Twitter information network grows and expands, it becomes more valuable for everyone who participates. Our open approach helps us get closer to providing universal connectivity to a global network of immediate information,” commented Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.
