Former COO (Chief Operations Officer) and current CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of Apple Tim Cook showed his philanthropic side in an email sent out to all Apple employees. The letter announces the introduction of a matching gift program that goes something like this: when an employee makes a donation to a non-profit organization, Apple will match that donation, up to $10K per year.

The matching gift program will launch on the 15th of September and at first it will be available to full-time Apple employees in the US. Tim Cook explained that the program will be expanded to other parts of the world in the future. The text of the email Tim Cook sent out to Apple employees is reproduced below.

Team:
I am very happy to announce that we are kicking off a matching gift program for charitable donations. We are all really inspired by the generosity of our co-workers who give back to the community and this program is going to help that individual giving go even farther.

Starting September 15, when you give money to a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, Apple will match your gift dollar-for-dollar, up to $10,000 annually. This program will be for full-time employees in the US at first, and we’ll expand it to other parts of the world over time.

Thank you all for working so hard to make a difference, both here at Apple and in the lives of others. I am incredibly proud to be part of this team.

If you’d like more information on the program, you can get it on HRWeb, which can be easily accessed through AppleWeb.

Tim Cook took over as Apple CEO after Steve Jobs resigned in August. Must be mentioned here that Tim Cook served as interim CEO on several occasions when Steve Jobs took a medical leave. The letter Steve Jobs sent out when he resigned is reproduced below.

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

The conclusion is that with Steve Jobs gone, Tim Cook is bringing philanthropy back to Apple.
