It seems that the Mac OS X rumors were off only by a couple of days (which we do not matter all that much because they were weekend days), and Apple has indeed issued a Mac OS X 10.5.6 update, thus closing a total of 21 security holes. Since we are on the topic of OS security, it must be noted that Apple has made Tiger safer as well with the Mac OS X 10.4.11 .

“The Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update is recommended for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard versions 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3, 10.5.4, and 10.5.5. It includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac. You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you have modified the operating system through other means,” says Apple.

There are two Mac OS X 10.5.6 updates available for download – Mac OS X 10.5.6 Client (about 370MB) and Mac OS x 10.5.6 Server (about 470MB). Let’s focus on the enhancements and features in the Client one:
- When the language is set to (Swiss) German there used to be some problems with Calculator.
- The DVD player now boasts an increase in terms of performance and reliability.
- The issues of running iCal Events Automator as a client have been fixed.
- Data referring to various time zones and DST (Daylight Saving Time) has been updated.
- Smart card compatibility bugs have been solved.
- Portable Macs now feature a Trackpad System Preference pane.
- A total of 21 security vulnerabilities have been fixed

Apple did not focus all its attention on Leopard and early this week issued some security fixes for Tiger as well. With Mac OS X 10.4.11 several vulnerabilities have been dealt with: Adobe Flash Player plug-in, Internet sharing DoS (denial of service), malicious archives/images/ISO files, and so on.

If you would like to update your Mac OS X, a download location is available here. Keep in mind that you could always simply initiate the download by clicking Apple Menu -> Software Updates. You might also want to be made aware of the fact that if you plan to jailbreak your iPhone, its is impossible to do so with Mac OS X 10.5.6 (the OS will not recognize the iPhone when it is in DFU mode).
