The month of September kicked off with an incredible announcement from Cupertino-based software developer Apple – iTunes has been updated to version 10.0. As part of the update iTunes got a new icon and a social networking feature called Ping.

Apple has come out to announce that the new music-oriented social network has proven to be a great success. In less than 48 hours after the release of iTunes 10 and the Ping social music discovery service, more than 1 million people joined Ping.

Vice President of Internet Services with Apple, Eddy Cue, explains just how popular Ping proved to be: “One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping. As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing.

If this is the first time you’re hearing about Ping, here is what the new social network for music allows you to do:
- Follow your favorite artists, like you do on Twitter. Check out their posts, videos, tour dates.
- Create an iTunes profile and let your friends follow you. You can tell your friends what you’re listening to, what artists you follow, what concerts you plan to attend.
- Follow your friends and find out what they’re listening to, what concerts they will attend, and so on.
- In the Recent Activity feed you can view your friends’ posts about artists, albums, songs and concerts.
- View a consolidated Top 10 list of the songs and albums your friends and the artists you follow are downloading from iTunes.

“iTunes is the number one music community in the world, with over 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, and now we’re adding social networking with Ping,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs,. “With Ping you can follow your favorite artists and friends and join a worldwide conversation with music’s most passionate fans.”
