Apple Sold 3 Million New iPads in 3 Days

As you may remember, Apple presented the third generation iPad on the 7th of March. After calling the new iPad “revolutionary from the outside in”, Apple explained that the device comes with a new chip, better camera, higher resolution, and faster download/upload speeds.

On Friday, March 16, the new iPad went on sale. Apple started selling the third generation iPad though its retail stores and through authorized resellers and it seems that the device sold like hotcakes. Monday, March 19th, three days after the new iPad went on sale, Apple announced that it sold more than 3 million devices.

“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold―the strongest iPad launch yet,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Customers are loving the incredible new features of iPad, including the stunning Retina display, and we can't wait to get it into the hands of even more customers around the world this Friday.”

Right now the new iPad is available for purchase in Apple retail stores in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, UK and the US Virgin Islands. Starting with 8AM on the 23rd of March, it will become available for purchase in 24 more countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macau, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

If don’t know what the new iPad has to offer, here’s the lowdown:
  • New Retina Display – 3.1 million pixels (1 million more than an HD TV) to make everything you see look sharp and realistic.
  • New A5X Chip – with tis quad-core graphics, it provides a fast and responsive user experience.
  • 5MP iSight Camera – it takes stunning pictures because it features advanced optics, backside illumination, auto-white balance, and face detection. And it can record 1080p HD videos.
  • 4G LTE – the third generation iPad connects to fast data networks and delivers blazing download and upload speeds.

The operating system that powers the new iPad, iOS 5.1, comes with a a redesigned Camera app with video stabilization technology, the ability to delete photos from Photo Stream, support for dictation in English, French, German and Japanese, and Personal Hotspot.
