No operating system is perfect or fault-proof, and this includes the iPhone OS 3.0, feature-rich as it may be. In order to solve some of the problems affecting the iPhone-dedicated operating system, Apple has started working on the iPhone OS 3.1. So far the company has rolled out iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 1, iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 2 and now the iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3. Alongside the 3rd Beta version of the OS, Apple rolled out the iPhone OS 3.1 SDK – as always.

And just as always, the software is available for download only to members of the Phone Developer Standard or Enterprise Program. A nondisclosure agreement (NDA) is preventing any of them from sharing details about the iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3 with the media, or anyone else for that matter.

This is the only official word we have from Apple: “iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 3 and iPhone OS 3.1 beta 3 are now posted to the iPhone Dev Center. These versions are for development and testing only and should be installed on devices dedicated to iPhone OS 3.1 beta software development. Please read the iPhone OS Pre-Install Advisory and the iPhone SDK 3.1 beta 2 release notes before downloading and installing. Use the Apple Bug Reporter if you discover compatibility or functionality issues while testing with the iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 release.”

The iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3 and accompanying SDK are available for download directly from Apple from its official iPhone Dev Center web page (link here).

If you are a developer and your iPhone 3.1 Beta 2-powered device displays the dreaded pink screen of death, this problem can be very easily explained: Apple set an expiration date for Beta 2, the 28th of July, 12AM local time.

So what new bits does the iPhone OS 3.1 Beta 3 bring to the table? Rumor on the wed has it that the operating system provides support for augmented reality apps on the iPhone 3GS. Rumor also has it that you can copy/paste videos and view Tethering Data under Settings -> General -> Usage.
