Apple is inviting developers to start creating apps for the upcoming Apple Watch by using WatchKit, software that was recently rolled out alongside iOS 8.2 Beta SDK.

“Apple Watch is our most personal device ever, and WatchKit provides the incredible iOS developer community with the tools they need to create exciting new experiences right on your wrist,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With the iOS 8.2 beta SDK, developers can now start using WatchKit to create breakthrough new apps, Glances and actionable notifications designed for the innovative Apple Watch interface and work with new technologies such as Force Touch, Digital Crown and Taptic Engine.”

What You Can Create with WatchKit
  • WatchKit Apps – create apps that Apple customers can use on their iPhones and Apple Watches. WatchKit apps are made up of two components: an extension that runs on the iPhone and a set of UI resources that are installed on the Apple Watch; the iPhone extension runs in the background and updates the UI and responds to user interactions.
  • Glances – timely information is displayed on the Apple Watch’s interface so the customers can quickly glance at it.
  • Actionable Notifications – the customers can interact with the Apple Watch and take actions from their wrists.
If you are a member of Apple’s developer community, if you want to create apps for the Apple Watch wearable device, then I invite you to follow this link. It will take you to the WatchKit section of the Apple Developer website.

Apple presented the new Apple Watch wearable device back in September. The Cupertino-based company explained that it will launch three distinct smartwatch collections early 2015: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition. These three collections will be available in two different sizes: 38 mm and 42 mm.

According to information included in Apple’s WatchKit, the 38mm Apple Watch will have a resolution of 272 x 340 and the 42mm version will have screen resolution of 312 x 390.
