Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.1 Beta, iPhone Dev Team Quick to Respond
It turns out that the iPhone OS 3.0, even though it comes with a very long list of features, also comes with some bugs and stability issues. Apple plans to resolve these problems with an update, and in order to achieve this goal the Cupertino-based company has already seeded a Beta version of the iPhone OS 3.1. Alongside iPhone OS 3.1 Beta, Apple has also rolled out the iPhone OS 3.1 SDK (Software Development Kit).
The iPhone OS 3.1 Beta and accompanying SDK are available for download directly from Apple from its official iPhone Dev Center web page (link here). The updated operating system is available for testing purposes to members of the Phone Developer Standard or Enterprise Program, and anyone involved in testing the software is prevented from sharing details with the rest of the world under a nondisclosure agreement (NDA).
“iPhone SDK 3.1 beta and iPhone OS 3.1 beta are now posted to the iPhone Dev Center. These versions are for development and testing only and should be installed on devices dedicated to iPhone OS 3.1 beta software development. Please read the iPhone OS Pre-Install Advisory and the iPhone SDK 3.1 beta release notes before downloading and installing,” explained Apple.
Word on the web has it that the iPhone OS 3.1 comes with the following improvements:
- When you edit video clips, the OS does not save over the original video. Instead you have the option to select “Save as copy.”
- Voice Controls over Bluetooth works properly now.
- When moving icons, the iPhone vibrates.
- AT&T profile 4.2
- Modem firmware version 5.08.01
- APIs that would allow 3rd party apps access to videos, including the option to edit videos.
- Improvements to OpenGL and Quarts.
If somehow you manage to get your hands on the iPhone OS 3.1 Beta, you are very well advised to not install it. This release is meant for developers only, not the regular user – it’s better to wait for the general release than run into problems you cannot solve.
An additional word of warning is provided by the iPhone Dev Team: “ultrasn0w users must stay away from any firmware updates past 3.0 (including today’s 3.1 beta) until we release the tools that let you update the firmware without updating the baseband. For most phones out there, baseband updates are irreversible and you’ll lose ultrasn0w. The 3.0 jailbreak was one of those (rare) times where both the jailbreak and the unlock coincided (the only other time was 2.2). It’s important that people realize that *most* firmware releases aren’t like that, and you need to take steps (via the tools) to separate the firmware update from its included baseband update.”
