Apple Pokes Fun at Microsoft by Remaking the Windows Logo

It’s not unusual for software companies to show that they have a lighter side and make fun of their competitors. That’s especially true of long-time competitors Apple and Microsoft, two of the biggest names in the software world.

Apple’s latest endeavor in this regard is to remake the Windows logo, adopting a literal approach to the word “windows.”

Apple’s iCloud Calendar support page explains what do to if you have problems using iCloud Calendar on iOS, OS X, iCloud.com and Microsoft Windows. Logo icons for all these platforms are displayed on the support page. Like this.

Click the iOS 8 logo to be taken to the section where you’ll find instructions specific to the mobile operating system. Click the OS X logo to see instructions for Apple’s desktop OS, click iCloud.com logo to see instructions on how to fix problems with web-based iCloud calendars. Click the Windows logo and…nothing happens. If you click the other logos, the page will scroll down to a specific section. If you click the Windows logo, nothing happens.

Speaking about the logo. Notice anything strange about it? It’s not the real deal, is it? That’s not the authentic Windows logo, that’s a picture of a window. The authentic Windows logo looks like this.

It could be a mistake on Apple’s part. But I’m not buying it. I don’t think someone at Apple got confused and posted the wrong logo. I think Apple is just poking a bit of fun at Apple. And if the desired effect was to get a laugh out of people, I’m glad to say it worked on me. I did indeed laugh when I found out about this. And I’m still giggling as I’m writing this.

Microsoft’s no stranger to similar shenanigans

About a year ago, back in November 2014, Microsoft released several ads that promoted its products while making fun of Apple's.

In this video, Microsoft says that you don’t need a bigger iPhone (in reference to the iPhone 6 Plus that has a large 5.5-inch Retina HD display). What you really need is a more personal, personal assistant. Or to put it in other words, Microsoft shows us how Cortana is better than Siri because it can do more.

And in this dance-off video, a Windows-powered Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro goes against the MacBook Air.

IKEA can have some fun too

Back in September 2014, furniture giant IKEA rolled out a video that introduced an innovative new device called the “bookbook.” IKEA took an Apple approach to presenting life enhancing new technology that features an everlasting battery, expandable interface, tactile touch technology, and more.
