Just like Google, Apple is celebrating the fact that people are downloading apps from its app stores. The Cupertino-based software developer announced that more than 100 million downloads have been served via its Mac App Store, the Mac equivalent of the very popular App Store, and that overall, more than 18 billion downloads have been served via the popular App Store.

Apple couldn’t be happier with the success of the App Store and also with the success of the Mac App Store. By taking a look at the figures, it’s no wonder Apple is so happy. There are more than 500,000 apps in the App Store, more than 1 billion downloads from the App Store are recorded monthly, and overall more than 18 billion App Store downloads have been recorded. The Mac App Store is doing great as well, having recorded more than 100 million downloads in but a year since its launch.

Here is what Apple’s Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, Philip Schiller, had to say about the App Store’s and the Mac App Store’s success:

“In just three years the App Store changed how people get mobile apps, and now the Mac App Store is changing the traditional PC software industry. With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world.”

It’s no wonder the Mac App Store is so successful. It is after all home to thousands of app from a variety of categories, from games and lifestyle to education and productivity. Visit the Mac App Store (available as a free update for Mac running on OS X 10.6 or later) and you will be able to find a wealth of apps. You can search by categories, find out which are the top paid and top free apps, find out which apps are hot at the moment, and find out which apps impressed Apple staff and became staff favorites.
