Earlier this month Cupertino-based software developer Apple announced that it is approaching an important milestone, mainly the 10 billionth app download. Over the weekend, when most of us were busy nursing that killer hangover, Apple announced that it reached that 10 billionth download milestone.

Apple said it would give the user who downloads the 10 billionth app a great prize consisting of a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. That's a pretty enticing prize to win, but not as enticing as the prizes Apple has given away on other such occasions. When the company celebrated 1 billion downloads, it gave Connor Mulcahey, the one who was lucky enough to download the 1 billionth app, a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card and an iPod Touch, a MacBook Pro, and a Time Capsule.

The one to be lucky enough to download the 10 billionth app and win the $10,000 iTunes Gift Card is Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK. The app she downloaded is Paper Glider, a free game developed by Neon Play Ltd, which you may know from other games, like Flick Football, Golf Putt Pro and Hotshot Pool. In the Paper Glider game you have to flick a paper airplane and see how far you can get it to fly. Tap the screen to give your plane a wind boost, avoid the ceiling fans, and get the plane out the wind – that’s what you have to do.

Looking back in time, it was back in April 2009 that Apple was celebrating the 1 billionth app download. Then in June 2010 it was celebrating the 5 billionth app download. It is now January 2011 and Apple is celebrating the 10 billionth app download. The App Store grew quite a lot in popularity (and app downloads) in little over 2 years.

“With more than 10 billion apps downloaded in just two and a half years—a staggering seven billion apps in the last year alone—the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”
