Apple announced that more than 5 million iPhone 5 devices have already been sold.

The new iPhone 5 became available for purchase in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK on the 19th of September. As expected, a lot of people were eagerly awaiting to get their hands on the new iPhone 5 and enjoy the new features it has to offer.

We got proof of this a couple of weeks ago when Apple announced that 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders were recorded in the first 24 hours the device became available for pre-order. At the time, Apple touted the fact that the iPhone 5 proved to be twice as popular as the iPhone 4 S. You see, when the iPhone 4S became available for pre-order, more than 1 million pre-orders for the device were recorded in the first 24 hours.

Further proof that a lot of people were eager to get the iPhone 5 came at the start of the week when Apple announced that 5 million iPhone 5s were sold. In just a few days after its launch, the iPhone 5 sold more than 5 million units. Here’s what Apple CEO Tim Cook had to say about it.

“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”

Expect iPhone sales to go up as the device becomes available in more countries. On the 28th of September the iPhone will become available for purchase in these 22 countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. By the end of the year the device will be available for purchase in more than 100 countries all over the world.
