Announcing the Linux 20th Anniversary Video Contest
Twenty years ago, back in 1991, the Linux kernel was released to the world by Linus Torvalds. It’s been 20 years and during all this time Linux has grown and evolved into a properly good operating system that basically dominates the market – apart for the desktop. Microsoft is still top dog on the desktop. Don’t take my word for it, here’s what Linux Foundation Executive Director Jim Zemlin said in an interview for Network World:
“I think we just don't care that much [about Microsoft] anymore. They used to be our big rival, but now it's kind of like kicking a puppy. Linux has come to dominate almost every category of computing, with the exception of the desktop.”
Linux powers a variety of devices, apart from desktops. It powers more than 90% of the top 500 supercomputers, most servers around the world, smartphones (Android for example is Linux-based and so is Palm’s WebOS), tablets, Sony TVs and camcorders, and even the Amazon Kindle.
To celebrate Linux’s 20th anniversary, the Linux Foundation has launched a video contest and is inviting all Linux fans to submit a 1-minute long video that demonstrates the impact Linux had on computing, business and/or culture over the past 20 years. Out of the community’s favorite videos, Linus Torvalds himself will choose the winner. Additional information on this contest is available here; guidelines and rules available here.
The winner of the video competition will be announced at LinuxCon 2011, event which will take place between the 17th and 19th of August in Vancouver. Speaking about LinuxCon, all attendees are invited to celebrate Linux’s 20th anniversary at the Bootlegger's Ball which will feature live music, a full dinner buffet, an open bar, casino games and much more. Additional information on LinuxCon 2011 is available here.
