The recently released Mac App Store, which turned out to be very popular by the way, is home to more than 1,000 free and paid apps, apps that are sorted in categories like Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities. The Mac App Store is available to all Snow Leopard users as part of the Mac OS X 10.6.6 update (which is rather unimpressive from a security point of view).

Among the free apps you will find in the Mac App Store is the official Twitter for Mac client, which is based on the Tweetie for Mac app, the desktop client developed by Loren Brichter a.k.a. “Atebits”. Back in April Twitter acquired Tweetie and welcomed Atebits on its team. Since the acquisition the Twitter team and Atebits have been hard at work – so far they rolled out the official Twitter for iPhone app and now the Twitter for Mac client.


Among the paid apps you will find in the Mac App Store is the immensely popular puzzle video game developed by Finland-based Rovio Mobile, mainly Angry Birds for Mac. The game is priced at $9.99 (or £5.99 or €7.99 for non-US residents), but for a limited time it is available at a special discount price of $4.99.

“The game initially includes 195 levels packed with hours and hours of gameplay. Customers can expect free updates and additional levels to the game. In addition to this, there will be unique enhancements not found in the mobile version, free of charge,” said Rovio Mobile in a blog post.

If you have a PC not a Mac and you want to play Angry Birds, then you need to know that Angry Birds is available in the Intel AppUp center. Windows XP and Windows 7 users can get the game via the Intel AppUp center and enjoy the same 195 levels Rovio mentioned above. The Windows version of Angry Birds is priced at $9.99 just like the Mac version – it is offered at a discount price of $4.99 for a limited time as well.

I mentioned above that the Mac App Store turned out to be very popular. I was referring to the fact that in just one day after the launch of the Mac App Store more than 1 million downloads were recorded.
