Developed by the Mountain View-based search engine giant, Google Shopper is an app that turns your smartphone into a shopping assistant. With the app you can learn more about products you want to buy, view videos and read reviews about the products you want to buy, compare prices at online and local stores, save and share products for later viewing.

This sort of functionality has been available to Android users since February 2010 – that’s when Google Shopper for Android was released. As of February 2011, once year later, the functionality Google Shopper has to offer is also available to iPhone and iPod Touch users.

“We’re excited to let you know that Google Shopper, our popular Android shopping application, is now available for iPhone as a download in the App Store. You can download Google Shopper for free in the App Store. Shopper is available for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 with iOS 4.0+ in English only for the United States and the UK. We hope you enjoy shopping with Google Shopper!” announced Richard Hung, Senior Product Manager, Google Shopper.

By getting the Google Shopper app you will be able to access information on millions of products. You can access this information by doing a traditional text search, by speaking out the name of the product (voice search), or by scanning the barcode of a product (if you are in a store and want to see product reviews).

The Google Shopper app turned out to be a big success on the Android platform and I don’t see why it shouldn’t be a big hit with iPhone users as well. Here are some number to put things in perspective: 9 months after the application was released, it had been downloaded more than 2.5 million times. The app was released in February 2010; by the middle of November 2010, more than 2.5 million downloads were recorded.
