Adventureland Torrent Pirate Gets Free Movie Ticket from Miramax
File sharing via torrent sites is something that big media companies have always frowned upon (point in case the trial against Swedish torrent tracker The Pirate Bay – details here) and it is also something that social networking sites would much rather keep away from (like Facebook’s move to block The Pirate Bay links – details here). When you share all sorts of content online, you can expect anti-piracy organizations to track your every move and even send you a warning or three (yes, three, as in the “three strikes your out” bill), but would you ever expect a movie studio to contact you after posting a simple comment on Twitter? That is exactly what happened to photographer, writer, graphic designer, and web designer, Amanda Music
According to Amanda, she posted the following question on Twitter: “Ugh why is Adventureland not on torrents yet?” When she posted the aforementioned question she was only interested in knowing when cams of the 2009 comedy would be made available for download on torrent sites; she never expected Miramax to contact her and ask her not to pirate the movie.
Miramax went about it in a relaxed and mildly mannered way; they asked Amanda not to download cams of Adventureland “in a nice way”. When she agreed to not pirating the movie, which coincidently already grossed in more than $11, Miramax once again contacted her, this time with a surprise – a free Fandango card for 2 tickets to Adventureland. In the end Miramax was true to its word, but not completely true: they didn’t provide Amanda with 2 tickets, they gave her just one. Still, it’s better than nothing and it is definitely better than receiving a notice that you might be breaking the law by sharing copyrighted material online. And if you are thinking about using Twitter just as Amanda did, chances are that Miramax did this as a one time, PR move.
