The development team from Adium, the very popular IM (instant messaging client) that runs on Mac OS X powered machines, has announced the release of two important updates: the Adium 1.3.4 update for the stable version of the software and Adium 1.4 for the Beta version.

“I am very pleased to announce the availability of Adium 1.3.4, our latest stable release. This features mostly improvements to the core: an updated libpurple, and an updated Facebook chat plugin. This is a highly-recommended upgrade, as it fixes an issue where Facebook would connect to the server too fast, utilizing too much bandwidth. 1.3.4 is likely going to be our final release for 10.4 users. Along with our release of 1.3.4, I’m terribly eager to announce the first of our series of betas for Adium 1.4, which features two new protocols, IRC and Twitter, as well as a ridiculously long list of improvements, including the latest and greatest in the world of libpurple,” said the official Adium blog.

Adium 1.3.4 highlights:
- The following Facebook glitches have been fixed: large amounts of data could be sent and received continuously in some scenarios; the Facebook numeric ID was displayed in the contacts list, not the contact’s name.
- Facebook proxy support has been improved.
- If the computer’s host name is not set, loading Jabber/XMPP account preferences will not cause Adium to crash.
- Message windows in Safari 4 now display correctly.
- libpurple 2.5.6.

Adium 1.4 Beta highlights:
- Runs only on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or higher versions (bad news for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger users).
- Added support for Twitter and IRC.
- Group chat and group chat bookmarks have been seriously enhanced.
- libpurple 2.6.0.
