Need for Speed No Limits, the first original title built exclusively for mobile devices, features hundreds of race events, tons of race courses and vehicles, lots of customization options, and exciting street racing action that involves weaving through traffic and avoiding the cops.

As a fan of the NFS franchise, I found plenty to like about Need for Speed No Limits. I also found a couple of big annoyances. Sigh!

1. Race on your iPhone, race on your Android

Need for Speed No Limits is available for Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. You can get your racing fix if you have an iDevice powered by iOS 6.1 or later or newer. This includes the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad and iPod touch.

Need for Speed No Limits is available for Google’s Android mobile operating system as well. You can play this white-knuckle edition of Need for Speed if you have a device that runs Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich or newer.

2. It’s not free, but you can play it for free

Electronic Arts (EA) went with a freemium approach for Need for Speed No Limits, meaning the game offers in-app purchases. You can get the game for free and you can make in-app purchases that range in value from an affordable $1.99 to a staggering $99.99.
  • Get Need for Speed No Limits for iOS from Apple’s App Store.
  • Get Need for Speed No Limits for Android from Google Play.

3. It’s made by Firemonkeys Studio

Need for Speed No Limits, the franchise’s first original title made exclusively for mobile devices, is made by EA’s Firemonkeys Studio in Melbourne, Australia. If the name rings a bell, it’s because this is the studio behind the popular Real Racing mobile racing franchise. You may be familiar with 2013’s Real Racing 3 game, which is available for iOS and Android.

4. A gigantic world that will grow over time

The action in the game takes place on the streets of Blackridge, where you have to weave through traffic, leave rivals in the dust, and evade the cops. It is a gigantic world that features more than 900 race events, 100 player levels, more than 10 game modes, 38 stunning race courses and 30 different licensed cars. As EA explained, the game world will grow over time.

5. A fleet of the world’s hottest cars

You’ll start out with a Subaru BRZ that you’ll be able to customize, tune and improve it to your heart’s content. As you play the game, you’ll get to unlock and purchase new cars. In time, you’ll have a collection of some of the hottest cars out there. And all the cars in your collection will be customized based on your preferences, of course. After all, car customization is a key element of the NFS games.

6. Simple controls

Tap left and the car will steer to the left. Tap right and the car will steer to the right. Swipe up to activate NOS and overtake your rival. There’s not much more to say about the controls – and that’s a good thing. The simple controls allow you to focus on the race.

7. Exciting gameplay with a familiar feel

I haven’t played a NFS game in quite some time, I have to confess. The moment I started playing Need for Speed No Limits, I immediately felt at home. The gameplay has a familiar feel. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll quickly get the hang of it.

If you’re not familiar with the NFS series, you’re in a for a treat: the game entails weaving through traffic, speeding over jumps, evading the cops, and taking part in hundreds of adrenaline-fueled races. You can even challenge rivals to head-to-head tournaments to earn rewards and exclusive items.

8. It’ll keep you busy until NFS comes out

EA wants to reboot the Need for Speed storied franchise. As part of this initiative, EA’s Ghost Games studio is working on a new game called Need for Speed – yes, simply Need for Speed. The game will be available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4, and will be released on November 3 in North America. So until Need for Speed is released, get your racing fix by playing Need for Speed No Limits on your mobile.

“Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're returning it to greatness in this reboot,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games. “Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed.”

The bits you’re not going to love about NFS No Limits

You’ll be charged for gas. I am not joking! When you run out of gas, you can either wait or pay to fill up the tank and keep on racing.

You can’t play without an internet connection. Unless you’re connected to the web, via Wi-Fi or your mobile connection, you can’t play the game.
