8 New iOS 10 Features We Wish Apple Would Announce at WWDC

Apple’s 27th annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will kick off at the historic Bill Graham Civic Auditorium precisely a week from now, on Monday, June 13, 2016.

We already know that Apple plans to unveil the new iOS 10 at WWDC 2016, but we don’t know what new features the mobile operating system will have to offer. So here are 8 features we wish Apple would announce at WWDC for iOS 10.

1. Better keyboard switching

There are alternatives to everything, including the default keyboard Apple built into iOS. Google and Microsoft, two of Apple’s biggest competitors, for have a total of 3 keyboard apps to offer: Word Flow, Hub Keyboard, and Gboard.

The annoying thing is that switching between keyboard apps is clunky, so we’re hoping that Apple might make this experience more enjoyable.

2. Instant apps

One of the things that Google announced at its annual developer-focused conference, Google I/O 2016, is Android Instant Apps, which lets you run apps on your Android even if they’re not installed on it.

This is actually a great idea and Apple, the company that turned apps into a defining characteristic of any modern operating system, might want to take a look into it.

3. Dark Mode

Among other things, iOS 9.3 introduced Night Shift, a feature that automatically adjusts your iPhone’s display colors based on time and location.

While night Shift is useful and all, we still want a dark mode for iOS. After all, OS X has a dark mode, so why can’t Apple come up with an iOS dark mode?

4. A proper means of hiding unwanted apps

Apple has yet to offer a proper means of hiding unwanted apps. Sure, there are various tricks that you can employ to hide apps out of sight.

But don’t you think it’s time to stop using tricks and get a proper means of hiding unwanted apps?

5. Split View for iOS

Split View isn’t something new, it’s one of the features introduced by iOS 9. Annoyingly, it is only available on the iPad. Why is that?

I know it can be done on phones too. Samsung already has a split screen view feature and Google plans to introduce multi-window support with the upcoming Android N. Split View would work great on a large, 5.5-inch device like the iPhone 6S Plus.

6. More customization options

Maybe one of the reasons why Android is the top mobile operating system in the US is that it lets you customize everything. You’ll probably spend several hours setting up everything just the way you like it, but it will be worth it.

Apple should stop limiting what you can do and just let you have your way.

7. Transcribe voicemails

There are other virtual assistants out there, but you’ve probably never heard of them. Siri is perhaps the best-known virtual assistant out there.

It’s rumored that Apple will announce several important changes to Siri at WWDC 2016. If these rumors are to be believed, Siri will be able to pick up phone calls, explain to your friends why you can’t speak to them, and transcribe voicemails.

8. Panic Mode for Touch ID

Thanks to Touch ID, you can lock and unlock your phone using your fingerprint. Is that enough to keep you safe? No it isn’t. Your fingerprint doesn’t have the same Constitutional protections as your numeric passcode, meaning that judge might order you to unlock your iPhone. It’s already happened.

What’s needed here is some sort of Panic Mode that activates when you use a certain finger. When you use the designated finger to unlock your iPhone, Panic Mode kicks in and limits access to personal information or resets the device altogether.
