7 Things You Must Know about Overwatch's Latest Hero: Doomfist

After a lot of teasing, Blizzard has officially unveiled Doomfist, the latest hero for its immensely popular team-based first person shooter, Overwatch.

Before I go and list the 7 things I thought you should know about Doomfist, let me get just one thing out of the way: the latest Overwatch hero is not voiced by Terry Crews, as had been previously speculated. Take a moment to recover from that blow, and once you’re done go and check out the list below.

1. He is the 25th hero in Overwatch’s roster

When Overwatch first launched back in May 2016, it featured a roster of 21 playable characters, a.k.a. heroes. Blizzard then added a 22nd hero, a 60-year-old sniper called Anna. The 23rd hero was a petite and feisty hacker from Mexico called Sombra. The 24th hero was a four-legged robot called Orisa. And the 25th hero is none other than Doomfist.

2. His real name is Akande Ogundimu

Doomfist is a codename, obviously. This hero’s real name is Akande Ogundimu, he is 45 years old, he hails from Oyo, Nigeria, and his family owned a prosthetic-technology company which he helped expand.

Very passionate about martial arts, Akande trained in traditional African fighting styles as well as wrestling and competed in tournaments all over the continent. Unfortunately, Akande lost his right hand during the Omnic Crisis and although his company fitted him with a cybernetic prosthetic, he wasn’t allowed to take part in fighting competitions anymore. Focusing on the company seemed like a good idea, but nothing could make up for Akande’s love of fighting.

3. He is the third Doomfist

As mentioned above, Doomfist is a codename, a title that can be passed from one person to another. Looking to fill the void created by his inability to take part in fighting competitions, Akande started working as a mercenary for Akinjide Adeyemi, better known to the world as the second Doomfist, the Scourge of Numbani.

It’s through the second Doomfist that Akande joined Talon. And once he became a member of Talon, he realized that he would have to become the new Doomfist if he ever hoped to fulfill his aspirations. So he killed Akinjide Adeyemi, become the third Doomfist, and rose high in the Talon organization.

4. He was captured by Overwatch

As a high-ranking member of Talon, Akande helped to orchestrate a conflict that the organization hoped would someday engulf the world. That plan was foiled when Akande was defeated and captured by Tracer, Winston, and Genji.

Akande eventually broke out of prison, recovered the Doomfist gauntlet, and retook his place in Talon’s inner council.

5. He’s an offense hero with a 3-star difficulty rating

Here’s what Doomfirst’s official description on PlayOverwatch.com says:

"Doomfist’s cybernetics make him a highly-mobile, powerful frontline fighter. In addition to dealing ranged damage with his Hand Cannon, Doomfist can slam the ground, knock enemies into the air and off balance, or charge into the fray with his Rocket Punch. When facing a tightly packed group, Doomfist leaps out of view, then crashes down to earth with a spectacular Meteor Strike."

6. His abilities are…

Every Ovewatch hero comes with a set up abilities that will help you defeat your foes and win the match. In Doomfist’s case his abilities are:
  • Hand Cannon – fire a short-range burst from Doomfist’s knuckles.
  • Seismic Slam – leap forward, smash the ground and knock nearby enemies toward Doomfist.
  • Rising Uppercut – uppercut enemies and send them flying in the air.
  • Rocket Punch – knock an enemy back and send him flying into a wall.
  • Meteor Strike – leap into the sky, crash to the ground and deal significant damage.

7. He’s not available to the public just yet

Right now, Doomfist is not available to every Overwatch player. This hero is only available to those who play on the Public Test Region, which is available for PC only. PS4 and Xbox One players, as well as PC players who don’t want anything to do with the Public Test Realm, will just have to wait until Doomfist is rolled out to everyone.

UPDATE: Doomfist is coming to public servers on July 27, 2017.
