Perhaps you want to record a video tutorial that explains how to use an app, or perhaps you want to record a video to show off your gaming skills to your friends.

It doesn’t really matter why you want to record your Android’s screen. What matters is that you can easily do that with one of these 7 apps.

Before we get started, I have to point out that none of the apps listed below require root and that all of them are available for free.

1. Google Play Games

Here’s one reason to stop ignoring Google’s Play Games app: it can record, edit and upload videos – gaming and otherwise.

Start playing a game and the app will capture your gameplay in 480p or 720p. On top of that, it will use your Android’s microphone to record commentary and your Android’s front facing camera to record facial expressions and reactions. Once you’re done with the recording, you can save the video locally or you can edit and upload it to YouTube.

Google Play Games isn’t restricted to recording video games. It can record other apps as well. The Play Games recording overlay will remain onscreen when you switch to the Home Screen, thus allowing you to record any app you want. Jump to the 2-minute mark in the video below to see it in action.

The one thing Google’s Play Games app doesn’t do is live-stream your videos. For that, you’ll need another Google app, mainly...

2. YouTube Gaming

If you want to live-stream games, you can’t use Google Play Games, you have to use YouTube Gaming. Tap the Go Live button from the upper right hand corner and two options will show up: record or stream.

Just like Google Play Games, YouTube gaming lets you record video as 480p or 720p. Unlike Google Play Games, YouTube Gaming doesn’t have to be tricked into recording other apps. It will record whatever app you want it to record. Once you’re done recording, you can save the video locally or you can upload it to YouTube.

The downside is that YouTube Gaming isn’t available everywhere. It may not be available in your region right now.

3. AZ Screen Recorder

AZ Screen Recorder puts a floating window on your Android’s screen. From this floating window you can do three things: access the ouput directory, play with all the settings that govern how the app works, and start the video recording. Speaking about that, AZ Screen Recorder can record for an unlimited amount of time, can record audio from the mic, and it can even record screen touches so the people watching the video know precisely where you tapped.

AZ Screen Recorder is a free app that offers in-app purchases. By making an in-app purchase, you can upgrade to the Premium version which comes with a few extra features: GIF converter, trim/cut video, draw on screen, Facecam support, magic button (pause, resume or stop recording without showing anything onscreen).

4. Lollipop Screen Recorder

The "Lollipop" in this app’s name refers to the fact that it works with any Android version from 5.0 Lollipop onward. So if you have Jelly Bean or KitKat, you can’t use this screen recorder. But if you have Lollipop or Marshmallow, you can use it to record whatever is on your Android’s screen.

Audio recording, picture-in-picture recording, recording start delay, and other useful features are offered for free by Lollipop Screen Recorder.

5. Mobizen Screen Recorder

Fun fact: Mobizen Screen Recorder has been downloaded more than 10 million times. No wonder, since it’s free, works with anything from Android 4.4 onward, and has all the great features you’d expect from an app of this type, like HD recording, video editing, and multiple sharing options.

You might also want to know about the free Mobizen application for Windows. It lets you control your Android smartphone from the comfort of your PC.

6. ADV Screen Recorder

Install ADV Screen Recorder on your Android and the first time you launch the app, a useful tutorial will show up. Said tutorial will present the launch overlay, will explain how to start a recording, will tell you that you can use a magic button to draw on your Android screen, and more.

ADV Screen Recorder is ad-supported. You can use the app for free, but you’ll have to put up with ads. To get rid of the ads, you need to make an in-app purchase and upgrade to the Pro version

7. GameRecorder+

GameRecorder+ is a game recording app offered by Samsung to its Galaxy customers. This means that it is compatible with Samsung Galaxy devices only.

There are a ton more apps that you can use to record your Android’s screen. What’s your favorite? Do you even use a screen or game recording app?
