Norwegian developer Opera Software just announced that it reached an important milestone:

The desktop version of the Opera web browser, which is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, is used by more than 55 million people around the word.

That’s the entire population of Shanghai and Beijing put together.

There are more than 1 million Opera for desktop users in the following 11 countries: Belarus, Brazil, Germany, India, Indonesia, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, United States, and Vietnam.

Alongside Opera for desktop, there’s Opera for mobiles and tablets. I bring this up only to remind you that more than 50 million people in India use Opera Software’s Opera Mini web browser to get online. With 50 million users, Opera Mini gets the 3rd spot on the list of most popular apps in India. The top 2 most popular apps are Facebook and Whatsapp, in case you were wondering.

In related news, you may want to know that there’s a new web browser out there: Vivaldi. Opera Software co-founder and former CEO, John von Tetzchner, rolled out a tech preview this January. The overall aim is to design a browser that blends together rich functionality, fast browsing speeds, and flexibility.

Here’s what it says on Vivaldi.com: “What you get now is our first Technical preview. It is a build intended to show the direction of our product. It is not perfect, far from it. Some of the key features we integrate are yet to be implemented, optimization needs to be done. But we hope that you get a glimpse of our product and what you can expect from us.”
