Google recently announced that more than 500 million Android-powered devices have been activated at an international level. And more are activated at a rate of 1.3 million per day.

I am sure it comes as no surprise when I tell you that the Android mobile operating system and that Android-powered devices are quite popular with people from all over the world. I alone, have recently purchased and activated two Android-powered devices, a Samsung Galaxy S2 and a Samsung Galaxy S3. But I digress, so let’s get back on track.

As I was saying, Android is quite popular all over the world. Google, the Mountain View-based search engine giant, has recently shed some light on just how popular Android really is. Via Hugo Barra, it has come to light that there are now more than 500 million Android-powered devices out there; it has also come to light that Android-powered devices are being activated at a rate of 1.3 million per day.

“Today is a big day for Android... 500 million devices activated globally, and over 1.3 million added every single day,” announced via his Google+ account, Google's Director of Product Management for Android, Hugo Bara.

Just so you get a clearer picture of how much Android’s popularity has increased, I remind that in February it was Andy Rubin who announced that there are 300 million Android devices out there and that some 850,000 devices are activated on a daily basis.

And now we have to focus on Android’s main competitor, Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. We don’t have any recent data, but according to data from July 2012, there are more than 410 million iOS-powered devices out there; about 210,000 iOS devices are activated daily. Perhaps Apple will shed some light on the matter at the special event it is hosting today – everyone expects Apple to introduce the new iPhone 5 smartphone powered by iOS 6 at this event.
