The problem with YouTube, as Google put it, is that it does not give you the choice you asked for and it does not provide the ultimate viewing experience. And because you’ve been asking for more for years, Google introduced YouTube Red.

YouTube Red is a subscription service that will set you back $9.99 a month. The question that arises is this: should you pay ten bucks a month membership for YouTube Red? Answer that question after you see the 5 cool things you’ll get.

1. Watch videos undisturbed. No more ads!

YouTube needs to make money to stay in business and content creators need to make money to keep creating content. Where does all this money come from? Not from you, because you’re not paying for anything. It comes from ads, obviously. Annoying, distracting, frustrating, and sometimes infuriating ads. I am definitely not a fan of ads, as I’m sure you already figure out.

To use YouTube Red, you have to pay $10 a month. Since YouTube Red makes money from subscriptions, you won’t see any ads. You’ll be able to watch as many videos as you want and you won’t be disturbed by any ads, not once!

2. YouTube Red extends across devices and products

Your YouTube Red membership extends across devices, it works anywhere you sign into YouTube – your desktop, your TV, your smartphone or tablet.

The membership covers all YouTube products – YouTube, YouTube Kids, YouTube Gaming, and YouTube Music. It even works with Google Play Music. Your membership to YouTube Red will also grant you access to Google Play Music, the streaming service that provides access to more than 35 million songs and expert-curated playlists.

“You’ll still be able to enjoy YouTube, along with the YouTube Kids, Gaming and Music apps free of charge. But with YouTube Red, you’ll be able to support the people who make your favorite videos while watching what you want, when you want, on any device you want, uninterrupted,” explained Senior Product Manager, Matt Leske.

3. Watch original series and movies

Starting with 2016, YouTube Red subscribers will have access to new, original shows and movies. Some of the biggest YouTubers will star in movies and series like:
  • Scare PewDiePie – PewDiePie encounters terrifying situations inspired by his favorite video games. A reality-adventure series from the creator and executive producers of The Walking Dead.
  • Sing It! – comedy that satirizes singing competitions, from Fine Brothers Entertainment and Mandeville Films.
  • Lazer Team – four small-town losers uncover an alien ship carrying a mysterious cargo and end up having to save Earth from a powerful enemy. A feature-length action-comedy from Rooster Teeth and Fullscreen Films.

4. Save videos and watch them offline

YouTube doesn’t let you save videos to your device and watch them offline, at a later time. YouTube Red does! It lets you save videos to watch offline on your phone or tablet. That’s something that comes in handy if you like to watch YouTube videos on your commute for example.

Speaking about watching YouTube videos, have you seen these corky tech ads starring big name celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Nikole Kidman, Beyonce, and Oprah? If you haven’t go watch them now.

5. Play videos in the background

Sometimes you don’t want to watch a video, you want to listen to it. Take music videos for example. You want to listen to the song, you don’t to watch it. As things are now, you can’t do that, because YouTube doesn’t let you play videos in the background. Turn the screen off and the music stops. Switch to another app and the music stops.

YouTube Red addresses this nuisance, for only $10 a month. Videos will keep playing in the background even if you switch to another app. Videos will keep playing in the background even if you turn your phone’s screen off.

YouTube Red will launch in the US on October 28, 2015.
Google will offer US viewers the chance to try YouTube Red for free for 1 month.

This isn’t the first time that Google offers an ad-free viewing experience, the option to keep videos running in the background, and the option to watch videos offline.

Back in November 2014, Google introduced a paid music subscription service called YouTube Music Key Beta. Just like YouTube Red, it was priced at $9.99 per month.
