For the past few years, Hollywood’s been churning out lots of super hero movies, like The Avengers, Ant-Man, and Deadpool, to name but a few. The trend isn’t going away anytime soon, with Hollywood planning to release even more super hero movies in the future.

Video games don’t get as much attention as super heroes. But, since gaming is really big business, Hollywood won’t shunt them away. Video games don’t get turned into movies as often, but they do get turned into movies. Like these 5 games, which are heading to the big screen this year.

Note: the list presented below covers the game-based movies that are going to be released this 2016. Movies that don’t have a release date as of writing this (as in we’re not sure they’ll be released this year), have not been included. The list features animations as well as live-action movies.

1. Ratchet & Clank

Based on the events of the original Ratchet & Clank game from 2002, this movie shows how Ratchet and Clank met each other. Chairman Drek has a weapon that can destroy entire planets; so Ratchet and Clank join the Galactic Rangers and heroically manage to save the Solana Galaxy.

Ratchet & Clank is going to be released on April 29, 2016 in the US.

2. The Angry Birds Movie

What started as a simple game about flinging birds, has turned into a huge franchise, spawning multiple spin-off games and tons of merchandise. Very soon, that franchise will also include a movie – a movie that takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds. A literal bird paradise, until the mysterious green piggies show up.

The Angry Birds Movie is going to be released on May 20, 2016 in the US.

3. Warcraft: The Beginning

As part of its push to turn iconic games into TV shows and movies, Activision Blizzard tapped Legendary Pictures to create a fantasy adventure movie that’s based on the World of Warcraft MMO. The movie’s plot goes something like this: the orcs, fleeing their dying world, invade the peaceful realm of Azeroth. While the humans face destruction, the orcs face extinction. What will their fate be?

The Warcraft movie is going to be released on June 10, 2016 in the US.

4. Assassin’s Creed

Ubisoft is taking a break and won’t a release an Assassin’s Creed game this year. They will release an Assassin’s Creed movie though. Starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, the movie is set in the same universe as the video games. Callum Lynch discovers that his ancestor Aguilar was an Assassin. So he explores his memories to gain the skills needed to become a Master Assassin and confront the Templars.

The Assassin’s Creed movie is going to be released on December 21, 2016 in the US.

We don’t have a trailer for this movie, not yet anyway. It’s rumored that the first trailer will be released alongside Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, on March 25, 2016.

5. Sly Cooper

This comedy animation is based on the 2002 video game "Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus." After he finds out that he’s descendant from a long line of talented international thieves, Sly and his friends go hunting for the pieces of an ancient book that holds The Cooper Clan’s family secrets. They must keep it out of the hands of Clockwerk, an evil Russian metallic owl that wants to end the Cooper family line.

Sly Copper is going to be released sometime in 2016. We don’t have a precise release date, but we do know it’s going to be released this year.

Honorable mention – Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was supposed to be released in the fall of 2016. That won’t happen and the movie’s release has been pushed to early 2017. It's going to be released on January 27, 2017 in the US.

This is the 6th installment and the final movie in the series. I have nothing against the Resident Evil games, but six Resident Evil movies is a bit too much. I watched all of them, because I like zombie movies. But to be honest, the only one I really liked was the first Resident Evil movie.
