The games released via the Rovio Stars publishing initiative don’t have any of the classic Angry Birds gameplay and are a bit more complex than just flinging fowl at swine. These are highly entertaining and highly addictive games that you’re sure to love.

Don’t take my word for it, check them out yourself. Here are 5 highly entertaining mobiles games released via Rovio Stars.

1. Tiny Thief – The magic from the point-and-click games of old

Tiny Thief is a point and click, puzzle-solving, hidden-objects, stealth-based adventure game developed by 5 Ants. The action is set in a medieval fantasy world but mind you, it’s a medieval world that’s plagued by greed, corruption and injustice. You play as Tiny Thief, a hero who has to use sneakiness, cunning and trickery to outsmart rogue pirates, the Dark Night, a giant robot, and other fearsome foes.

The goal in each of the game’s bite-sized stages is to steal a certain object without getting caught. You will have to hide out of sight so the guards don’t see you, you will have to sneak past them, you will have to distract them so they leave their posts. It varies from level to level… speaking of which.

You are awarded stars for completing the level. To get a 3-star rating, you will have to do more than steal a certain object. You will also have to find Tiny Thief’s rodent friend, which is hidden somewhere on the map, and you will have to find collectible items, which are hidden in the background.

The best thing about Tiny Thief, apart from the entertaining stealth-based gameplay, is that it has an appealing visual style and an offbeat sense of humor.

Get Tiny Thief for iOS from Apple’s App Store and Tiny Thief for Android from Google Play. At launch, the game cost $2.99. Rovio later decided to ditch the price tag and go for a freeemium approach. This means the game is free now, but offers in-app purchases.

Get Tiny Thief for Windows and OS X from Steam. The game is priced at $5.99 at the time of writing this.

2. Sky Punks – Thrilling races in an exotic world reborn by magic

Sky Punks is a fast-paced endless-racing game developed by Fathom Interactive. The action in this game is set in the exotic world of Neo Terra, a future Earth reborn by magic. The goal in the game is a simple one: get on your Glidewing and race across Neo Terra’s treacherous and unpredictable landscape.

You’ll get to upgrade your existing Glidewing and unlock new Glidewings; as expected, each comes with different stats. You’ll get to assemble a team of punks and unlock new punks for your daring team, each with their unique powers, and you’ll get to collect a playful set of costumes for your punks.

Get Sky Punks for iOS from Apple’s App Store.
Get Sky Punks for Android from
Google Play.

3. Plunder Pirates – Become the most formidable pirate in the world

Plunder Pirates is a pirate-themed MMO strategy game developed by Midoki. The goal in this online multiplayer free-for-all is to become the most formidable pirate in the world. So if you ever dreamed about being a cut-throat buccaneer that roams the high seas, discovers hidden treasures, and battles rival pirate captains, then this game is for you!

The gameplay is a bit more complex than that of the other games I’ve presented so far. You will have to create your own 3D pirate island and manage it. You’ll have to recruit a crew of fearless pirates, each with unique skills and traits, and train them. You’ll get to sail the seven seas, find hidden treasures, and battle other players for loot.

Get Plunder Pirates for iOS from Apple’s App Store.
Get Plunder Pirates for Android from Google Play.

4. Juice Cubes – Explosive, fruit-themed match 3 game

Juice Cubes is a fruit-themed, match 3 game developed by Pocket PlayLab. The action in the game is set in a tropical archipelago that features mermaids, pirates, and even witches. As you complete the levels, you’ll encounter various crazy characters and you’ll unlock new islands

The goal in this game is the same as in other match 3 games: you have to connect three or more tiles to remove them from the playing field. The awesome thing about Juice Cubes is that it doesn’t ask you to move tiles around, it lets you connect them. And when you connect 3 or more, they go out with a bang!

I am not a big fan of match 3 games. But this one, this one has got me hooked. I like that I can create huge combos, I like the explosions, I like the music, I like the fun characters and the amusing dialog, I like that Juice Cubes can be played on multiple platforms.

You can play Juice Cubes on your iPhone, on your Android, on your Kindle Fire, and on Facebook.

5. Jolly Jam – Match 3 title with innovative gameplay

Jolly Jam is a match 3 puzzle game developed by Magic Tavern. Just like Juice Cubes, it doesn’t follow the classic match 3 gameplay – which is refreshing.

Here’s how Jolly Jam’s game play mechanic works: you have to draw around matching jellies to complete levels. As you complete the levels, you’ll get to travel across Jelly Kingdom and you’ll help Prince Jam save Princess Honey.

You’re sure to love the innovative game play mechanic, the amazing graphics, and the cute jelly monsters.

Get Jolly Jam for iOS from Apple’s App Store.
Get Jolly Jam for Android from Google Play.

The story behind Rovio Stars

Rovio Stars is the company’s first foray into including third party titles in its game line-up. It’s a mobile publishing initiative that works like this: talented developers come up with entertaining games and Rovio publishes them. It’s a win-win situation. The developer gets an audience for the game he created, and Rovio presents interesting new titles to its customers.

“In the course of our work, we run into so many fantastic upcoming titles -- games with memorable characters and entertaining gameplay that are also just really fun to play!” said Rovio. “These are the sorts of titles we’re interested in. We want to help the developers to give these games that last coat of polish, publish the games and find their audience.”
