Here is proof that even though it was acquired by Microsoft, Skype’s popularity has not been affected in a negative way, it just kept on going up. On Tuesday, April 10, Skype Head of Social Media Jennifer Caukin announced that there are now 40 million users around the world signed into Skype at the same time. Out of the billions of people around the world, and out of the hundreds of millions of registered Skype users, 40 million are concurrently signed into Skype.

“[Today] 40 million concurrent users were signed onto Skype all at once,” said Jennifer Caukin, who is responsible for Skype’s social content and strategy globally. “This is a massive new milestone for a simple piece of software that helps make meaningful connections a cool part of people's lives every single day,” Jennifer Caukin added.

It is no wonder Skype is so popular with users from all over the world: you can use the application to make free video calls to other users, you can make audio calls to other Skype users, you can send SMS and instant messages, you can share files, you can make calls to mobiles and landline phones for a very low price, and you can get voicemails. Skype provides a lot of communication capabilities either for free or for a very low price.

Getting back to the fact that there are now 40 million concurrent users on Skype, this means that Skype’s popularity has doubled in only a few years. People keeping track of these things will remember that in late 2009 Skype’s Peter PArkes announced that there are 20 million Skype Users signed in at the same time. It’s now early 2012 and the number of users concurrently signed into Skype has gone up to 40 million.

As a little reminder, Microsoft paid $8.5 billion in cash at the start of 2011 to acquire Skype.
