On Monday, Apple was glad to announce that more than 40 million downloads from its App Store have been recorded. About half of that, about 20 billion downloads were recorded in 2012 alone.

Cupertino-based company Apple started the week with an announcement that sheds a bit of light on how popular its App Store is. Here are the numbers that Apple was more than glad to share with the world:

500 million – this is the number of active App Store accounts.

750 million – the number of apps available for download/purchase in the App Store to users in 155 countries around the world.

2 billion – the number of apps downloaded from the App Store during the month of December, 2012.

7 billion – the amount of money earned by developers via the app Store.

20 billion – the number of apps downloaded from the App Store this 2012.

40 billion – the overall number of apps downloaded from the App Store. This number represents unique downloads, it excludes re-downloads and updates.

“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

The Temple Run game was a big hit in 2012 – as Apple explained, the Imangi Studios-developed app was downloaded more than 75 million times. “The success of our game Temple Run in 2012 was nothing short of astonishing,” said Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi Studios. “We were simply looking to create a game that was fun and easy to play, but once it hit the App Store, the game took off. This past year, we saw more than 75 million downloads of Temple Run on iOS.”
