Opera Software, the Norwegian developer behind the innovative Opera web browser, had some exciting news to share with the world on Tuesday, the 31st of July. On the last day of the month Opera announced that more than 200 million people chose Opera’s mobile browsers to surf the web. Or to put it in other words, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile are now being used by more than 200 million people.

“Two hundred million people use Opera Mini and Opera Mobile to connect to the world around them,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera. “For many of them, a browser is more than a tool to ‘browse the web’. Sometimes it’s a school when you can afford none, sometimes it’s the only line to an outside world shut off by an oppressive regime. Providing a service that reliably and cheaply delivers critical information to just about everyone with a phone is the reason Opera makes browsers. We want to make a difference in the world, not only on the web.”

In related news, Mozilla, the nonprofit organization behind the Firefox web browser, announced that more than 3 billion add-ons have been downloaded from the Firefox Add-ons Gallery by users from all over the world. 3 billion is a very big number – it’s more than the total number of people on the internet today and about half of the world’s population.

Add-ons can be used to enhance or improve the browser’s looks and to boost its functionality. Since 2004 when they were first introduced, add-ons have been providing an efficient means of customizing the features, functionality and looks of the Firefox browser. Mozilla explained that out of all Firefox users, more than 85% installed at least 1 add-on to boost their web experience.

In further related news, Apple, the Cupertino-based software developer behind the Safari browser, announced that its recently released Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion has been downloaded more than 3 million times. A faster Safari browser is among the more than 200 new features the OS has to offer.
