It all started 38 years ago, when the first Star Wars movie hit theaters. Star Wars has since grown into a huge franchise, becoming a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. I doubt you can find someone who hasn’t at least heard about Star Wars.

This 3-part article is dedicated to the Star Wars franchise and focuses on some interesting facts any Star Wars fan should know. The first part is an infographic that presents 19 things you probably didn’t know about Star Wars. The second part presents some cool Star Wars figures and stats. Part 2 – Star Wars stats and figures

Darth Vader, the embodiment of badassery, appears for only 12 minutes in Star Wars Episode 4, the original Star Wars movie. Speaking of which, when Episode 4 was released, most theaters and even George Lucas thought it would flop. Only 40 theaters agreed to show the movie and George Lucas did even bother to attend the premiere. Instead, he went on vacation with Steven Spielberg in Hawaii. The good thing is that in Hawaii, the two came up with the idea for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The role of Han Solo (and Indiana Jones) propelled Harrison Ford to international fame. Do you how much he was paid to star in Episode 4? He got $10,000. Alec Guinness, the actor who plays Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original trilogy, made a lot more money than that. Guinness negotiated for 2% of the gross box office receipts for the movies he appeared in, which earned him $95 million. Makes sense, seeing that Episode 4 alone made over $300 million, making it the second highest-grossing movie of all time, if you adjust for inflation (the first highest-grossing movie of all time is Gone With the Wind).

Star Wars has a Guinness World Records title for the "Most successful film merchandising franchise." The total amount of revenue the franchise brought it is, drum rolls please, $27 billion.
