Apple touted the fact that in the first 24 hours, more than 2 million pre-orders for the new iPhone 5 were recorded.

It seems that the new iPhone 5 is twice as popular as the previous model, the iPhone 4S. When the iPhone 4S became available for pre-order, more than 1 million pre-orders for the device were recorded in the first 24 hours. In the iPhone 5’s case, the number of pre-orders went up by 100%. Or to put it in other words, in the first 24 hours, more than 2 million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 were recorded. Apple made this information public on Monday, the 17th of September, two days before the iPhone goes on sale at 356 Apple retail stores across the US.

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

Apple presented the new iPhone 5 at a special event held on the 12th of September. In case you’re not familiar with what the iPhone 5 has to offer, here’s the quick lowdown: thin and light all-new aluminum design, new 4-inch Retina display, new A6 chip, more memory, redesigned 8MP iSight Camera, new FaceTime HD front camera, a new Lightning connector, and ultrafast wireless technology. A closer look at the iPhone 5’s new features is available here.

iPhone 5 is the most beautiful consumer device that we’ve ever created,” said Philip Schille. “We’ve packed an amazing amount of innovation and advanced technology into a thin and light, jewel-like device with a stunning 4-inch Retina display, blazing fast A6 chip, ultrafast wireless, even longer battery life; and we think customers are going to love it.”

As mentioned above, the iPhone 5 goes on sale in the US on September 21st. The suggested retail price is of $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model, and $399 for the 64GB model.

On the 28th of September the iPhone 5 will go on sale in 22 more countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
