11 Less-known but Immensely Useful Websites Any Movie Fan Should Know About

When I’m not reviewing software, testing apps, or playing video games, I like to unwind by watching a movie (or TV show). If I need to know something about a movie, there is just one website I turn to for help – IMDb, the Internet Movie Database. I’ve known about this website for a long, long time, I’ve loved it from the start, I know it has all the information I want to find.

But, as the old saying goes, you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. IMDb is a popular and information-rich website that any movie fan is sure to love. That being said, you should know that there are other, less-known but immensely useful websites that are definitely worth your time. Here are my favorite picks.

1. RunPee tells you when to dash for the toilet

As a rule of thumb, you should always go to the toilet before the movie starts. Perhaps you forgot, perhaps there was a line and you said to yourself that you can hold it, perhaps you purchased a large beverage even though you shouldn’t have. It’s not important why you have to make a mad dash to the bathroom. The important thing is to no miss anything important while you’re in the bathroom.

This is where RunPee comes in. RunPee gives you a list of 1-to-4 moments when it’s safe to make a dash for the toilet. RunPee highlights 3-5 minute long scenes that don’t have any crucial plot twists, interesting moments, or exciting action. On top of that, RunPee tells you if there’s anything to see during or after the end credits.

RunPee is available as a website and mobile app for iOS, Android, and Windows.

2. MediaStinger tells you if there are any scenes after the credits

The movie is over, you get up from your seat, and slowly start to walk out of the theater. As you’re walking out, some extra scenes appear onscreen, making you feel like a fool for not having waited.

These extra scenes are called “stingers”. You’ll find them in movies and you’ll also find them in video games. If you don’t want to miss any stingers, then you need to know about the aptly named MediaStinger (formerly MovieStinger).

MediaStinger tells you if there are any stingers during and/or after the credits. It features a huge database of movies and games, trailers for upcoming movies and games, news about movies and games, as well as movie and game reviews.

MediaStinger is available as a website and as a mobile app for iOS and Android.

3. Movieo helps you find a movie to watch

This happens to me a lot. I want to watch a movie, but I don’t know what movie to watch. Sometimes I ask friends to suggest a movie, other times I turn to the web for help. And more to the point, I head to Movieo, a website that offers a variety of filters to help me find a nice movie to watch. I can filter movies by genre, runtime, IMDb score, and more. On top of that, I can access movie lists and access a featured movies section.

Get started with Movieo by visiting its official website.

4. Movienr also helps you find a movie to watch

There are plenty of movie recommendation websites, services and apps out there. If, for whatever reason you don’t like Movie, you could give Movienr a try. It can help you discover movies, it lets you create an archive of the movies you’ve seen, it gives you movie recommendations, and it lets you socialize with fellow movie fans.

5. Watch This finds a random movie for you to watch

Perhaps you don’t want to use fancy filters to find a movie. You want the simplest, easiest way of finding a movie: click a button and get a movie suggestion. That's something you can do with Watch This.

Visit the Watch This website, click on Get Me a Movie, and the website will bring up a random movie. If you don’t like it, click on Get Me Another Movie!

6. Flix Roulette finds a random Netflix movie or TV show

In keeping with the “find a random movie” theme, I have to bring up Flix Roulette (formerly Netflix Roulette). Visit the Flix Roulette website, click on Spin, and the website will display a random movie or a random TV show. If you want to watch it, just click the Watch on Netflix button.

Flix Roulette is available as a website and as an Android app.

7. Flixed tells you if a movie is available in your country

Netlfix recently went global, expanding into tons of new countries around the world. With a few exceptions, it is available everywhere. But just because it is available in your country, that doesn’t mean you have access to all of Netflix's movies and TV shows.

Finder.com went over every available Netflix library and recently published this article, showing how much the libraries vary from country to country.

Flixed goes one step further, showing precisely where a movie or TV show is available. It uses flag icons to show the countries where a movie or TV show is available. .

8. KillerFlix helps you find a horror movie

When October comes around, I get in the mood to watch some horror movies. But which one to see? There are just so many!

KillerFlix, a website made by the guys at Bloody Good Horror, can help with that. Tell KillerFlix what sort of horror movie you want to watch and it will bring up multiple suggestions. Use it to find gory, ghost, slasher, and other types of horror movies.

9. Reel Scary tells you how scary a movie is

Reel Scary can also help you find a horror movie to watch. But its main purpose is to tell you how scary a movie is. It rates movies by how scary they are, breaking down the rating into several categories: amount of gore, the movie’s potential to disturb you, and your stress level during the movie.

10. CringeMDB tells you if a movie is appropriate for the whole family

CringeMDB aims to provide an answer to the question “can I watch this movie with my parents?” When the whole family gets together to watch a movie, you don’t want to watch something that is too violent for example. You want to watch something that is appropriate for the whole family, young and old alike. Type a movie name into CringeMDB and it will tell you if you should watch it or not.

11. JustWatch finds the best places to rent or buy movies and TV shows

You’ve finally made up your mind, you’ve finally decided what movie you want to watch. Now that you know what you want to watch, it’s time to rent or buy the movie. There are lots of services that offer movies, which is good. The prices vary from one service to another, which isn’t very good. JustWatch to the rescue.

JustWatch is a streaming search engine. Tell it what movie you want to watch and it will look for it across Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and many more. Once it finds the movie you’re looking for, it shows you how much it will cost you to rent or purchase it.

So to sum it, JustWatch checks multiple online services to find you the best price for the movie you want to watch.

JustWatch is available as a website and as a mobile app for iOS and Android.

This reminds me about Yahoo Video Guide, an iOS and Android app that searches across multiple services to find where movies or the latest season of your favorite show is streaming. Yahoo Video Guide is a good looking app that helps you find and stream all your favorite movies and TV shows.
