The Mozilla-developed Firefox browser is already a properly good piece of software. It looks great, it is fast, and it works like a charm. The nice thing about it is that you can always enhance the functionality the browser provides; you can do so by using one of the many add-ons available for Firefox. You can find them on addons.mozilla.org (AMO for short).

Out of all the add-ons available on AMO, do you have any idea which one is the most popular? Nope, you’re wrong – its Adblock Plus, an add-on that can be used for multiple purposes, from removing online advertising to blocking all known malware domains. Proof of the fact that Adblock Plus is the most popular Firefox add-on is the fact that it is the first one to be downloaded more than 100 million times.

“Today we’re very happy to celebrate a huge milestone: Adblock Plus became the first browser add-on to be downloaded 100 million times!” announced the Mozilla Add-ons team. “Customization has always been one of the best features of Firefox, and 100 million downloads of a single add-on combined with 2.2 billion add-on downloads overall shows just how important that extensibility is to our users,” continued the Add-ons team.

The Add-ons team offered Wladimir Palant and the Adblock Plus community its heartfelt congratulations and said that what Palant did is nothing short of extraordinary. Other developers dream of coming up with an application that is used by so many users and has such a big impact as Adblock Plus has.

If this is the first time you are hearing about Adblock Plus, here’s the add-on’s official description as presented on AMO:

“Adblock Plus allows you to regain control of the internet and view the web the way you want to. The add-on is supported by over forty filter subscriptions in dozens of languages which automatically configure it for purposes ranging from removing online advertising to blocking all known malware domains. Adblock Plus also allows you to customize your filters with the assistance of a variety of useful features, including a context option for images, a block tab for Flash and Java objects, and a list of blockable items to remove scripts and stylesheets.”
