Depending on how you feel about it, Pokémon Go is either the greatest game ever, or the most annoying thing to hit the media in a long, long time.
When something is as popular and as widely covered as Pokémon Go is right now, you get some fairly odd and intriguing reports. Such as…
1. Bad guys are using it to rob people
The bad guys set up a PokéStop and wait for unsuspecting victims to come and get robbed. It’s happened in Missouri, New York, and Maryland.
Or they see someone playing Pokémon Go and just snatch their phone. It’s happened in San Francisco.
2. Players keep stumbling onto dead bodies
Shayla Wiggins, a 19-year-old girl from Riverton, Wyoming went to the nearby Big Wind River to find Pokémon. What she found instead was a dead body floating in the water.
A young man found a dead body behind a Holocaust Memorial in New Hampshire. The body was found floating in Salmon Brook near Rotary Common Park in Nashua, New Hampshire.
3. Players helped catch a murder suspect
While playing Pokémon Go, former marines Seth Ortega and Javier Soch, noticed a suspicious man who was bothering children at a playground. The cops were called and they arrested the man, on suspicion of child annoyance.
Investigators later uncovered that the man was wanted for attempted murder.
4. A guy was caught cheating
Know why it’s a bad idea to play Pokémon if you’re secretly seeing your ex? Because the game shows the precise location where you were. When your current girlfriend sees you were at your ex’s house, she’ll find out you’re a cheater.
That’s what happened to this guy.
5. Westboro Baptist Church hates the game
And it’s using it to spread hateful messages.
What did you expect? This is the Westboro Baptist Church we’re talking about. They’re known for being very hateful and intolerant.
6. Animal shelter asks Pokémon Go players to walk their dogs
You have to do quite a bit of walking to catch Pokémon and to hatch Pokémon eggs. So why don’t you use this as an opportunity to walk an adoptable dog?
Go down to the Muncie Animal Shelter and take one of their dogs for a walk.
7. People are playing the game at very inappropriate times
Mid-wake during a funeral, at the hospital while the wife is giving birth, or during a visit at Auschwitz or at the Holocaust Museum.
Even on the front line in Iraq.
8. Trump is using it against Hillary Clinton
Trump took a swing at Hillary Clinton by posting this Pokémon-themed video on Facebook.
Clinton on the other hand is using Pokémon Go as a way to get voters to register.
9. Microsoft loves Pokémon Go
Pokémon Go being a huge success is great for Nintendo and it’s great for Microsoft too. At least that’s what Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella thinks. According to Nadella, all this interest in Pokémon Go might translate into interest for HoloLens, Microsoft’s augmented reality device.
Playing Pokémon Go on the HoloLens might look something like this.
Too bad Pokémon Go isn’t available for Windows Phone, just iOS and Android. Hey, you know what might persuade the developers to make it available for Windows? A petition.
10. People are getting hurt, lost, and arrested
The game tells you to pay attention. But does anyone listen? Nobody listens!
This guy fell into a pond.
These guys fell of a cliff.
This guy crashed his car into a tree because he was playing it while driving.
This guy got stabbed and instead of going to the hospital, he kept on playing.
These guys got shot at, but they weren't hit.
These guys got lost in a network of caves.
These guys were arrested for jumping a fence at the Toledo, Ohio zoo.
And this guy was arrested because he said he wants to “purge” anyone attending Pokémon Go events or simply walking around collecting Pokémon.
