WhatsApp, Viber, Kik, Skype, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Firefox Hello, Google Hangouts – the list of messaging apps goes on, and on, and on. There is one name on said list that should not go unnoticed: Telegram, a messaging app that’s been around for just two and half years.

Despite being a relative newcomer to the IM game, Telegram managed to attract the attention of a very large crowd. Take a look below to find out how popular Telegram has become since it was launched in August 2013, and to uncover lots of interesting facts about this messaging app.

1. Telegram has 100 million active users

On Tuesday, the team behind the messaging app announced that Telegram has more than 100 million monthly active users and that 350,000 new users sign up each day.

2. Telegrams delivers 15 billion messages per day

The Telegraph Team made another announcement on Tuesday. That Telegram delivers 15 billion messages per day.

3. Telegram spent $0 on advertising

When a company announces that their app has 100 million active users and that those users send 15 billion messages per day, you can’t help but think “how much did they spend on advertising?” In Telegram’s case, the answer is zero.

Telegram did not spend a dime on advertising. Telegram trusted its users to spread the word, and it worked.

4. WhatsApp goes down, 5 million people sign up for Telegram

Back in February 2014, just a few days after Facebook purchased WhatsApp for a staggering $16 billion, the WhatsApp messaging service went down. It was WhatsApp’s “longest and biggest outage in years”, as explained by Jan Koum, WhatsApp founder and CEO.

WhatsApp going down was a huge boom for Telegram. 4.95 million people signed up for Telegram, making it the #1 most downloaded iOS app in 48 countries.

5. Brazil blocks WhatsApp, Telegram gains another 5 million users

Back in December 2015, Brazil temporarily blocked access to WhatsApp. So what did the people do when they couldn’t use WhatsApp? They looked for an alternative. 5.7 million people signed up for Telegram during Brazil’s 48-hour WhatsApp blockade.

6. Telegram was born from the need to keep the secret agencies out

Telegram takes privacy seriously, using powerful encryption to secure your messages. Why? To keep the Russian security agencies out. Nikolai Durov once stated that he set out to design a messenger app that the Russian security agencies could not access.

To prove that it can keep out any would-be snooper, Telegram went as far as to hold a contest and offer a $200,000 prize to anyone who could crack the app’s encryption. No one managed to do it.

7. Telegram’s founders lost their company to the Russian Government

Telegram was founded by Nikolai and Pavel Durov, the brothers who launched VK, Russia’s largest social network. Unfortunately for them, the Russian Government took it over and the brothers had to leave the company.

8. Pavel Durov is a modern-day nomad

Pavel Durov fled Russia after the government took over VK. He is now in exile, moving from country to country every few weeks, with a small group of programmers by his side.

9. You can use Telegram on anything

In today’s interconnected world, messaging services need to cover every device. Telegram certainly does that. You can use it on your desktop computer, be it a Windows, Mac, or Linux machine. You can use it on your smartphone or tablet, no matter if it runs iOS, Android, or Windows. And last but not least, you can also use it within your browser.

10. Telegram will never show ads

Telegram is free, just like many other messaging apps. Unlike other messaging apps, Telegram will not ask you to put up with ads. Telegram promises to remain free forever and to never show any ads or ask you to pay for a subscription.

“Telegram is free and will stay free — no ads, no subscription fees, forever,” says Telegram's FAQ.
