View Picasa and Flickr Images in Gmail

In the past, when you received an email message from one of your friends, and that message contained a link to a photo on Picasa of Flickr, you had to open a new tab or a new browser window to view it. Google realized this could prove to be annoying for some users and decided to do something about it. The result is an option that lets you preview Picasa images right within Gmail; and another option that does the same thing with Flickr images. Activating these two options needs a bit of work, but nothing too complicated as you will see below.

Here is what you have to do to get Gmail to preview Picasa and Flickr images:

Step 1. Go to Gmail (click here – a new tab will open), enter your login credentials and click Sign in.

Step 2. Look to the top right corner of the screen. Locate the Settings link and click it.

Step 3. In the Settings window click the Labs tab (the second to last tab to the right; just check the image at the bottom if you don’t see it).

Step 4. Locate Picasa previews in mail and click Enable. Then locate Flickr previews in mail and click Enable.

Step 5. Click Save Changes and you’re done. In this regard there are two Save Changes tabs conveniently placed at the top of the Labs experiments list as well as at the bottom of the list. Click whichever one you want, it does not make any difference.

Tips
Please note that I’ve taken the long way round on this one. If you already have a Google account and you are signed in, you can just click here and you will be directed to Gmail Labs. This will basically take steps 1, 2 and 3 out of the equation.
Some Gmail Labs features may go haywire and as a direct result you may not be able to access your inbox. If this should happen use http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0 to log into Gmail.
