How To Use Keyboard Shortcuts in Yahoo! Messenger

Keyboard shortcuts are important for one simple reason – they speed up the manner in which we use software. Instead of reaching for the mouse, placing the cursor on a tab and going through a series of clicks, you can simply press a few keys on your keyboard and achieve the same goal. The Yahoo! developed instant messaging application, the aptly named Yahoo! Messenger, comes with several keyboard shortcuts. Just see below.

Keyboard shortcuts available in Yahoo! Messenger:

F1 – Help
Ctrl+M – Send an instant message
Ctrl+L – Call a computer
Ctrl+K – Call a phone number
Ctrl+T – Send an SMS message
Ctrl+Y – Send an email
Ctrl+Shift+C – Send my contact details
Ctrl+Shift+M – Send my Messenger list
Ctrl+Shift+R – Request contact details
Ctrl+Shift+A – Add a contact
Ctrl+H – Toggle offline contacts visibility. Press Ctrl+H and all invisible contacts will be hidden away; press it again and they will be displayed.
Ctrl+Alt+A – Set status to Available
Ctrl+Alt+B – Set status to Busy
Ctrl+Alt+I – Set status to invisible.
Ctrl+Shift+F8 – Access your display message.
Ctrl+Shift+P – Access the Preferences menu
Ctrl+Shift+D – Sing in to mobile phone
Ctrl+D – Sign out
Ctrl+Q – Close
Alt+F4 –Close

In the IM window you can use these keyboard shortcuts:

F3 – View recent messages
F2 – Toggle timestamps on and off.
F7 – Display images (hides/displays the avatar)
Ctrl+Alt+F8 – Don’t share a display image
Ctrl+Shift+F8 – Change the display image
Alt+Shift+V – View full archive
Ctrl+Shift+P – Archiving preferences
Ctrl+N – Start new conversation with another contact
Alt+S – Send message. Pressing Enter also sends out the message.
Ctrl+S – Save your conversation
Ctral+P – Print out your conversation
Esc – Close IM window
Ctrl+Z – Undo
Ctrol+X – Cut
Ctrl+C – Copy
Ctrl+V – Paste
Ctrl+A – Select all
Arrow up – Previous message
Arrow down – Next message
Ctrl+E – Search the web. Select a word, hit Ctrl+E and you will be presented with a list of search results (the browser window ill popup).
Ctrl+M – Send an instant message
Ctrl+L – Call a computer
Ctrl+K – Call a phone number
Ctrl+T – Send an SMS message
Ctrl+Y – Send an email
Ctrl+Shift+C – Send my contact details
Ctrl+Shift+M – Send my Messenger list
Ctrl+Shift+R – Request contact details
Ctrl+G - Buzz

Tips and warnings
If you are still using Yahoo! Messenger version 6.0 through 7.5, you need to upgrade. September 2009 is the last month that Yahoo! still provides support for these versions. With no support, continuing to use Yahoo! Messenger 6.0 through 7.5 is not a good idea.
