If you are familiar with InPrivate Browsing in Microsoft’s Internet Explorer or Private Browsing in Mozilla’s Firefox, then you should know that Incognito Mode is basically the same thing. It is a feature that lets the Google Chrome user browse the web safe in the knowledge that no information related to that browsing session will be recorded by Google Chrome. The browser will not remember the URL of the webpages you’ve accessed, the downloaded files history, or any cookie.

Here’s how you can start Incognito Mode in Google Chrome

Step 1. Launch the Google Chrome browser.
In this regard you can double click the desktop icon, click the Chrome icon from the Start menu, or whatever other means you use to launch the software application.

Step 2. From the top right hand corner of the Chrome window click the wrench menu.

Step 3. A dropdown menu will appear. Click New Incognito Window.

Step 4. A new Google Chrome (Incognito) window will appear. Use it to do all your covert web browsing. When you’re done, close the incognito window.

Tips and warnings
  • If you are the kind of person that would much rather use the keyboard than the mouse, then you should know that you can replace steps 2 and 3 from the tutorial presented above with this keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + N. There are plenty other keyboard shortcuts you can use in Google Chrome. A detailed, comprehensive list is available here.
  • If you download a file and save it onto your hard drive while using Chrome in Incognito Mode, said file will not be removed when you close Incognito Mode. It will be preserved.
  • If you bookmark a webpage while using Chrome in Incognito Mode, that bookmark will not be removed when you close Incognito Mode. It will be preserved as well.
  • It might be a good idea not to sign into your Google Account while using Chrome in Incognito Mode. If you’re signed into your Google Account, all your web searches will be recorded by Google Web History. The only workaround here is to pause Google Web History.
